"The Singer" is meant to be an expression of my experience with PTSD, after being raped and physically abused for a period of time at age 14. 25 years later, I still battle the hyper-vigilance left behind, as portrayed by the crow; constantly assessing my surroundings even when I am unaware, or choosing to ignore the impulse. As much as I have struggled to let go as time passes, I am thankful to this watchful eye. The expression on my face in the self portrait reflects the excruciating pain of recovery, while remaining mute about my experience for many years after. I am a classical singer by trade, and I often feel that my passion for singing came from wanting so much to be heard.
