After my sexual assault in 2021, I began to relate heavily to the story of Medusa, and with this piece, I wanted to show how the experience can change you and make you feel like a monster. I wanted to use non-traditional colors for the snakes to represent how unpredictable responses to assault can be and I wanted to emphasize the tiredness in the eyes to express the mental turmoil that I and many others experienced after assault.
I was sexually assaulted in 2021, which led to extreme dissociation and issues with self-image which I include in my artistic work. This piece references the feelings of dissociation and feeling inhuman after being assaulted. This also depicts my complicated feelings towards the word survivor as a word that was placed on me despite not feeling connected to it.
